Kaymakli Underground City
Kaymakli Underground City, is located in the town of Kaymaklı, which is 20 km from Nevsehir city and was opened to visitors in 1964. The building which has 8 floors in total and was built in various eras. The first two floors became a city during the Hittite period and the other floors became cities during the Byzantine and Roman periods through the expansion of other areas. Today, 4 floors are open to visit.
The floors are divided into different sections like barn, church, workshop, food storages and kitchen. The first floor is reserved for granaries like in other underground cities. Provides the transition to compartments as living areas. The church is located on the second floor and the cemetery is right next to the church. There are also seating areas on this floor. The most important places in the city are on the third floor. Kitchen, food stores, wine cellar are all located on this floor. Although not all the floors of the Kaymaklı underground city have been discovered yet, this city is the largest underground city in the Cappadocia Turkey.
